Sustainability Indicators research project results now available

11 January 2010

The Collections Council of Australia is pleased to announce the publication of Towards Sustainability Indicators for Museums in Australia.

Authored by Eleanor Adams as part of her Master of Arts in Curatorial and Museum Studies at the University of Adelaide during 2009, this report is the culmination of twelve weeks of research into sustainability indicators, with a particular focus on collecting organisations.

A set of pilot sustainability indicators is proposed, based on consultations with the directors and CEOs of some major South Australian collecting institutions, (including the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide, Carrick Hill, the History Trust of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, the State Library of South Australia and the University of Adelaide) as well as ArtLab Australia and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This study provides a general overview of sustainability and reporting practices in Australian collecting organisations. The final report discusses the role of the museum in a sustainable community when considered against the ‘four pillars’, and proposes a pilot model of 12 suggested core indicators.

Ms Adams’ thesis provides an excellent starting point for further detailed study and consultation on sustainability indicators for collecting organisations and the feasibility of quadruple bottom line reporting.

The Collections Council congratulates Ms Adams on her research, and on her preparation of this report.
