Display storage comes of age

Like most museums, only about 5% of the Powerhouse Collection is on display at any one time at the main Museum site in downtown Sydney. Opening the doors of the Powerhouse Discovery Centre: Collection Stores at Castle Hill in March 2007 has given people in Western Sydney and regional New South Wales the chance to see a great deal more of the technological and Australian themed collection.

Powerhouse curators were asked to select some of their favourite objects for the display / storage units. The objects they chose represent our key collecting areas such as decorative arts, science, technology, Indigenous cultures and Australian history.

The centrepiece of the visitor experience, the Display Store, is effectively a museum housing a diverse range of collections, starting on the lower level with objects from the transport collection - 7 light aircraft and gliders are suspended above coaches, trams, buses, cars and steam engines.

The large upper level in the Display Store is home to over 3,000 objects. Here, very large objects are displayed along the walls in pallet racks, and most of the smaller objects are housed in metal storage units and drawers. The drawers enable active visitors to discover the diversity of objects in the Powerhouse Collection.

The Conservation Department played a very important role in setting up the Display Store. In the case of the display drawers, objects had to be carefully secured to prevent them from moving around when the drawers were opened or closed. The objects were embedded in a layer of ethafoamTM (carved for each object shape), with a cloth barrier between the object and the foam. Another layer of ethafoam in the base of each drawer gives extra protection against vibrations and movement. This method has been very successful in securing the objects safely.

Explaining collections care challenges

As the Discovery Centre is a storage facility, we thought it a good opportunity to offer visitors some insight on preservation issues that occur both in museums and at home. We developed 18 preservation and collection management themed drawers, and interspersed them amongst the curatorial drawers. The collections care drawers have orange fabric backgrounds (see photos) to help differentiate them from the blue fabric backed object drawers.

For collection management, we discuss and demonstrate how to collect the stories behind an object to give that object more context; how to document and photo-document an object; how to label various materials; how to handle and move objects safely; and how we catalogue Powerhouse objects.

For preservation, we discuss why and when materials deteriorate, and recommend which storage materials to use and which are best to avoid. We also discuss whether to surface clean objects or not, and how to go about it.

In regard to environmental conditions, we give practical advice on lighting, humidity control, insect identification (including recognising the damage insects cause), and we discuss the value of an approach called ‘Integrated Pest Management’.

There are also preservation drawers on how to care for object and material types like textiles, books, metals, ceramics, glass and photograph storage. Object support, for storage or display, is also covered.

In some of the preservation drawers there are information sheets e.g. lists of suppliers. These sheets can also be obtained in the Resources Room. There has been a lot of feedback from our volunteer guides about the preservation drawers. They generate a lot of interest with our visitors.

The Discovery Centre hosts a themed monthly Open Day (the second Saturday of each month). In March each year, the Discovery Centre hosts a conservation day. It is presented by the conservation team through a range of programs including lectures, advice banks and demonstrations on preservation topics for the public to view.
