In November 2006 the Collections Council Board requested that this survey be expanded to include all public collections in Australia. This decision was influenced by the example of the United States publication A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America's Collections. This project was a collaboration between Heritage Preservation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The IMLS is the U.S. equivalent of the Collections Council of Australia.

The proposed Survey is cancelled because of the cessation of funding to the Collections Council of Australia. A database of collecting organisations is, however, being prepared for others to use when conducting surveys.
