Thank you to all of the people who have made contact with the Development Officer with examples of collections facilities surveys already conducted, and to the organisations which registered their names and addresses on the Collections Council database. This information will aid the research design and database building phases of this project.
In November 2006 the Collections Council Board requested that this survey be expanded to include all public collections in Australia. This decision was influenced by the example of the United States publication A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America's Collections. This project was a collaboration between Heritage Preservation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The IMLS is the U.S. equivalent of the Collections Council of Australia.
In the coming months the Collections Council Secretariat will develop the research design for the Australian National Survey of Collections and Facilities. Please register your organisation on our database at the 'Tell Us' webpage, and let us know about other collections and facilities surveys that you are aware of.
